J.R.R. Tolkien, known for his fantastical mythology, was influenced by the folklore, legends, and literature of Northern Europe. However, the ancient Greek language and literature (mythology, literature, philosophy) also had a significant impact on the literary path of the author, whose initial studies were in Classical Literature at the University of Oxford.

The book includes texts from English-language literature that are translated into Greek for the first time and attempts to highlight the intertextual dialogue of Tolkien's works with the Homeric epics, Platonic philosophy, and the myths that inspired ancient Greek tragedy.
