Neoliberal capitalism, whose nature has changed significantly since the 1980s, is teetering. As it is perceived as unjust and unequal, it fuels anger and bitterness, providing fertile ground for populism. And the worst part is that it proves to be ineffective, generating less and less growth. So, should we put an end to it and radically change the system? The authors confront this question head-on. Their diagnosis is strict: the devaluation of labor by profit, the choice to favor the shareholder at the expense of the worker and other business partners constitute, according to the authors, the DNA of neoliberal capitalism and explain the weak demand. Therefore, far from being omnipotent, this capitalism needs crutches to keep moving forward. Crutches that are nothing but debt in all its forms and the creation of money. By showing that these economic policies have reached their limits today, Patrick Artus and Marie-Paule Virard do not just analyze the risks lurking for our societies. By proposing another model of capitalism, they share with us the reasons why we can hope. Why did neoliberal capitalism derail? What are the initial elements that might compose the outline of this "next world," which we so often invoke as a new collective hope? We wanted to narrate here the story of this transition, attempting to assess the risks posed by the economic policies implemented since the end of the Glorious Thirty (1945-1975) up to today, but also to share new reasons to hope.
