Description & Specifications

The significant role played by Hermoupolis of Syros in the economic activities not only in the Greek state but also in the broader Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean region for many decades of the 19th century is well known.

This leading role is largely reflected in the printed material produced in this city. Thanks to the electronic catalog of the 19th-century Greek bibliography that the Bibliological Laboratory "Philippos Iliou" has posted online, we can more accurately measure this book production, which exceeds 1500 titles, correct or expand earlier estimates regarding the typography of Hermoupolis and its contributors, the printers.

The printers of Hermoupolis not only met the significant needs of the society they were part of but also participated, at least to some extent, in the network of printed production that addressed all residents of the Greek state and Greek speakers of the Ottoman Empire.

For example, they published school manuals and other general interest materials that certainly exceeded local demands. Furthermore, the needs for information on political current events and political rivalries at both national and regional levels also led to the publication of political brochures and many newspapers (the relevant titles for these nearly reach 170 by 1900).

However, the crisis that struck Hermoupolis in the last decades of the 19th century and its gradual decline affected printing activities: many small printing houses were forced to close. In the fierce competition of the rapidly developing capital, 3-4 printing houses managed to survive, and with their modernization and broader reputation, they continued to exist into the early decades of the 20th century.
