An optimistic indication of cultural change in the field of popular psychotherapy is the belief that "whoever undergoes psychotherapy is healed," analogous to "whoever goes to the doctor is cured." Of course, the search for help from a professional represents progress on a cultural and scientific level, as it confirms the need for adequately trained and certified mental health professionals and combats centuries of dark prejudices regarding the origin of mental illness and its treatment methods.
One of the goals of this book is to attempt to change these anachronistic perceptions among the general public while producing new material for the Greek bibliographic context, which will enrich students and mental health professionals with research evidence on the effectiveness of group therapy and will familiarize every interested party with the diagnostic and therapeutic methodologies of clinical practice.
The reader is introduced from the very first chapters to the necessity of scientific planning for any initiative for group therapy, according to the guiding principles of the International Association of Group Psychotherapy, within the context of Greek mental health services. Each chapter includes, among other things, specific diagnostic tools that guide the specialist in their interventions with different clinical populations, with particular emphasis on therapy groups for the entire spectrum of addictions.
Taboo topics, such as the premature departure of patients and the professional burnout of therapists, receive special mention, according to the latest research data and international experience. And of course, in the age of technological revolutions, the author strives commendably to combine clinical examples with the first systematic efforts of university education in utilizing new technologies in the form of augmented reality and online counseling.
