Type: Liturgical / Ecclesiastical Text
Atmosphere: An edition that exudes sacredness and devotion, designed for worship life as well as personal study.
The text of the Holy Gospel constitutes the core of the spiritual as well as the liturgical and worship life of our Church. The importance of reading the Holy Gospel in the Divine Liturgy becomes evident from the fact that the Gospel Passages are read, according to tradition, "only by the Priest or the Deacon, with the Clergy and the People listening, as a sign of respect, standing upright, especially when the officiating Bishop removes his omophorion" (Apostolic Constitutions, BEPES, vol. 2, p. 53. Preserved, Ecclesiastical History, VII, PG 67, 1477). Having thus exhausted even the last reprint of the previous edition of the liturgical book "Divine and Holy Gospel," published in 1982, the Apostolic Diakonia of the Church of Greece proceeded with the present fully renewed edition of the Holy Gospel—with a new legible font, typesetting, pagination, and unique iconographic decoration for liturgical editions—aiming precisely at presenting an edition particularly well-crafted, worthy in every way, and fitting the sacredness of the Gospel text. The text of this new edition is the same as the previous one, that is, based on the patriarchal edition of the Byzantine text of the New Testament, with minimal corrections of oversights noted during the long period of circulation of the previous edition. "Shine in our hearts, O loving Master, the pure light of Your divine knowledge, and open the eyes of our mind to the understanding of Your Gospel proclamations. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, so that... we may live a spiritual life...," prays the Celebrant before the reading of the Holy Gospel. We wish this transformation of the Gospel word into a Gospel way of life to all readers of the "Divine and Holy Gospel." Amen. Phanariou Agathangelos, General Director of the Apostolic Diakonia.

Read an excerpt:
«In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.»
