This book attempts an approach to the city through the unseen, unpaid, and undervalued work of women. This work, carried out as "love, contribution, and care," makes the city and its specific areas a sustainable and lived space, in which cycles of capital investment and profit realization are inscribed, tolerable, although often difficult, living conditions are formed, ways of coexistence and social cohesion are built.
The research explicitly focuses on the world of women, without sharing common perceptions of a stable and almost static gender identity. On the contrary, through the perspective of space as a field of (co)existence of multiplicity and the focus on Athens (from the Metapolitik period to the electoral victory of SYRIZA), the changing ideas of what constitutes "women" in different places and times are highlighted, as well as the personal and collective identifications that different women attempt through specific combinations of public and private/personal, movement and stance (or entrapment), acceptance and rejection of established opinions and practices, daily overturns, and collective struggles.
All of the above ultimately lead to complex gender subjectivities, but also shape urban realities, which are explored in specific spatial and temporal contexts: in Perama in the years following the fall of the Dictatorship, in Ilioupoli when the peripheral neighborhoods of Athens are intensively redeveloped, and in Kypseli, as perceived by old and new residents as a multicultural neighborhood where, for three decades, relationships of neighborhood and coexistence have been built, in contradictory ways.
