Seven gripping cases that Miss Marple solves with her well-known acumen and intelligence: A mysterious man wounded by a bullet, the enigma of the lost treasure, a corpse and a measuring tape, the curses of a deranged caretaker and a horse accident, a lost pin and a perfect maid, a murdered wife in a hotel room and an inheritance, many potential heirs and just as many murderers.
Two additional mystery stories, "The Dressmaker's Doll" and "Strange Jest", without the participation of the famous Miss Marple, but equally atmospheric and thrilling.
Time is the best killer.

The priest's wife appeared around the corner of the rectory with her arms full of chrysanthemums. Her sturdy leather shoes were covered with some loose soil from the garden, which had even dirtied her nose, but she had no awareness of the fact.
She struggled a bit to open the rectory gate, which was barely held by rusty hinges. A gust of wind caught her battered felt hat and tilted it even more than before. "Damn it!" said Bunch.
Although her optimistic parents had named her Diana, from a young age Mrs. Harmon had become Bunch for quite obvious reasons, and the name had stuck ever since. Clutching the chrysanthemums, she passed through the gate to enter the churchyard and reached the door of the temple.
The November air was soft and damp. Clouds slid across the sky leaving blue patches here and there. Inside, the church was dark and cold because heating was only turned on during services.
"Brrr!" said Bunch expressively. "I'd better get this over with quickly, or I'll freeze to death." With the speed born of experience, she gathered the essentials: vases, water, flower holders. I wish we had lilies, thought Bunch. I'm tired of the stripped chrysanthemums. Her nimble fingers arranged the flowers in the vases.
The decorations were nothing particularly original or artistic, since Bunch Harmon herself was neither an original nor an artistic type, yet, in the end, the presentation was warm and pleasant. Carefully carrying the vases, Bunch walked up the central aisle and headed toward the Holy Table. At that moment, the sun came out.
