Description

Between the 15th and 13th centuries BC, the Hittite kingdom was one of the most significant in the Near East, as it controlled a large part of Asia Minor and northern Syria. It maintained close diplomatic relations with all the powerful kingdoms of the time, while dozens of thousands of tablets were discovered in its capital, which offer us a wealth of information.

Several tablets refer to the kingdom of Ahhiyawa, which is a significant Mycenaean kingdom in the Aegean. It is now considered established that this term is etymologically linked to the ethnonym "Achaeans." Hittite texts present the kingdom of Ahhiyawa as powerful and extroverted. It was often involved in the affairs of western Asia Minor during the 14th-13th centuries BC and maintained a stronghold at Milawanda (=Miletus).

In the 13th century, Hittite rulers recognized the Achaean king as their equal. Additionally, there is mention of a dispute related to Wilusa (=Ilion/Troy). The achievements of Piyamaradu, a vassal of the Achaean ruler, are of particular interest, as he created many problems for the Hittites, which are described in detail.

The introductory chapter briefly presents the history of the Hittite kingdom during the first half of the 2nd millennium. It also provides a short overview of the history of the Hittite language and script. In the next four chapters, the texts are presented chronologically with a comprehensive description of the historical context of the era. It is worth noting that these specific Hittite texts are presented for the first time in Greek.

  • The whole subject of the book is interesting but the title Mycenaean Aegean probably does not fit, always based on the content.

Very interesting subject, for a period that is lost in myth for Greece due to the destruction of the Mycenaean palaces and their archives..
