- "Where are you from?" is the most common question Greeks ask foreign visitors. It expresses the need to understand where someone comes from, to place them in a local, chronological, and social context. And yet, about 4,000 Greeks cannot give a clear answer: international adoptions from Greece to the United States (and later to the Netherlands), from the 1950s onwards, disrupted the sense of belonging. These adopted individuals and their families have spent seventy years wondering what exactly happened, while often desperately searching for their roots in a Greek family.
I hope that the book provides answers through the difficult journeys that the adopted individuals have gone through in their lives. Journeys that, all together, constitute an unknown chapter in the history of Greece and the United States during the Cold War.
