Most fifth-grade students have mastered the decoding mechanism during reading, but many struggle to understand what they read, as they cannot utilize and apply both cognitive and metacognitive strategies seamlessly.

This specific handbook is designed to develop and facilitate reading comprehension for fifth-grade students through appropriate strategies and accessible teaching techniques. Thus, it provides educators with an effective teaching tool for enhancing their students' reading abilities as well as simultaneously strengthening their written expression.

Additionally, through the variety of texts it utilizes, it connects students with both literature and various types of discourse and encourages them to become capable and critical readers. At the same time, they can engage with and internalize the structures either explicitly or implicitly, while the accompanying activities are text-centered and can be differentiated to meet the abilities of all students.

It includes four thematic units:

• Values… like People!!
• The magical world… of books
• Music… a universal language!
• Earth calling… space!

These align with students' interests and utilize their prior knowledge as a springboard for deepening or broadening it. Each thematic unit contains four subunits, which have been selected to correspond with interdisciplinary concepts (system, interaction, change, space, time, individual-group, similarity-difference, culture), which underpin the Interdisciplinary Unified Framework of Study Programs.
