Description

The true story of a Holocaust survivor On April 11, 1945, when American soldiers liberated the Buchenwald concentration camp, they made a remarkable discovery: Among the prisoners were more than a thousand Jewish children under the age of eighteen. These boys, who were under the protection of the camp's resistance movement, had experienced extreme hunger and horrific torture throughout most of the Holocaust and had witnessed incredible barbarity, while not even knowing if their parents and relatives were alive or dead. Among them was the fourteen-year-old Polish Romek Wajsman, who had survived by working as a slave laborer in a German munitions factory, and later Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel. The Boys of Buchenwald, as journalists called them, harbored incredible anger towards the world. They committed thefts, fought among themselves, and resolved all their differences with violence. Few believed they would ever manage to lead a normal life. For Romek and 427 other boys, everything changed when they were transferred to a reintegration institution in Écouis, France, in an effort to leave behind the horrific experiences of the worst side of humanity and embrace life again. This is their story. "It is a true gem of non-fiction literature, read breathlessly in the flowing translation by G. Panagiotakis and K. Mizan. Polish-Jewish Canadian Robbie Waisman (born Romek Wajsman in 1931) lived through the unspeakable horror of the ghetto and concentration camp. He is among the few children who came out alive from this Dantean hell. He recounts his martyrdom experience at a very mature age and with a clear intention of anti-racist activism, with the help of journalist and author Susan McClelland. The book overflows with tenderness and affirmation of life, even though it confronts us with the most unimaginable cruelty."
