A STUDENT DISAPPEARS IN EDINBURGH. This is not just any student, but the daughter of a wealthy banker. There is almost no evidence to lead the investigations, except for the impeccable instinct of Inspector Rebus, who believes that this is not a simple disappearance.

A ROLE-PLAYING GAME ONLINE. While searching her emails, the police will discover that the victim lived a hidden life and communicated with the mysterious Quizmaster, who delights in crafting macabre riddles.

A WOODEN DOLL INSIDE A SMALL COFFIN. An element that connects the girl's disappearance to the deaths of four women and to horrific murders that took place in Edinburgh in the 1820s and still haunt the city.

The Falls is the 12th adventure of Inspector Rebus, first published in Greek by Metaichmio in 2002. In the twenty years since, it has been reprinted four times, followed by the next 11 books in the series, the most recent being A Song for Difficult Times (2020).

Ian Rankin and John Rebus have been greatly loved by the Greek audience, who rushed to meet their favorite author during his three visits to Greece in 2002, 2009, and 2014, as part of his book promotion.

Rebus straightened his back, deciding not to say anything. At the door, Costello loudly wished him goodnight. Rebus had reached halfway up the stairs when he returned the greeting. He was thinking about the way Costello had wiped both the lighter and the pack. In all the years he had been in the Force, he had never seen a suspect do something like that before. It meant that Costello expected to be set up. Or, at least, that was how he wanted it to appear. However, a side of the young man had revealed itself to Rebus that was cold and calculating. He seemed like someone capable of looking ahead…

Nice read, not boring, with suspense for the resolution of the mystery from the middle onwards. Since I have read a little more than half of Rankin's books, the one I liked the most regarding the detective plot and I recommend to fellow readers of the author is The Memory of the Dead.
