The patriarch of Constantinople Callistus I (1350-1353 and 1355-1363) is one of the most significant ecclesiastical figures of the 14th century. His actions and works fall within a broad spectrum (political, religious, social, etc.) and reveal a charismatic and multifaceted personality.
His seven speeches, included in this volume, are published for the first time and are accompanied by an extensive introduction, a translation of the text, and comments. These speeches transport us to one of the most dramatic and tumultuous periods of Byzantine History.
