In the School of Women, the work revolves around the simple-minded middle-aged Arnolfo, who takes the four-year-old child Agnese and raises her to be his wife. The girl grows up under the supervision of two coarse servants and is cut off from the world to remain naive and illiterate, traits that Arnolfo deems essential in a good and obedient wife.

However, fortune brings the young Horatio to the city, who falls in love with Agnese and manages to steal her heart. After a series of comical misunderstandings, where Arnolfo unsuccessfully tries to drive Horatio away, the solution comes when the two young lovers unite in the bonds of marriage and Arnolfo leaves defeated.
