A book that helps a lot to learn the first basic kanji as an N5 and N4 student. Very nicely written with self-contained lessons so you can do one whenever you can and want (although you always need to go back a bit for revision). It is followed by Kanji from Zero 2 with many more and more advanced kanji.

In general, the From Zero series (see Japanese From Zero) has helped me a lot. Of course, knowledge of English is a prerequisite to read it. I also attend a language school so I can't guarantee that you will learn Japanese from this series, but it is definitely a good start, a good aid, and it helps you realize if you really want to spend more time later to learn Japanese. I recommend it.

Update 14/5/2026: I am not changing my review of the book, I just want to say to anyone who wants to learn Japanese (as someone who has now reached N3 level) not to stress too much about learning a lot of kanji at the beginning. As your vocabulary grows, you see that the kanji stick in your memory (especially for words with 2+ kanji) without having to learn them one by one. In the end, recognizing them when you see them is more important than being able to write them.
