Description

Although during the year the Earth orbits around the Sun, we do not feel this movement even though every day the Earth is in a different position than it was the previous day. Thus, from each new position, we see the Sun from a different angle as it moves daily from west to east.

That is why we also see different constellations in different seasons. The most popular and respected popularizer of astronomy in Greece guides us through the Greek sky by season, explaining and analyzing which constellations are visible depending on the time of year, how each month of the year got its name, and introducing us to basic concepts of astronomy.

Regardless of the name given to it, all peoples without exception established famous and numerous celebrations in honor of the Sun, especially during the periods of transition from one season to another. The greatest of these celebrations took place in all countries and tribes at the time of the winter solstice, on December 25th. It was the celebration of the birth of the Sun, and not without reason. Because as winter approached and the midday Sun appeared lower and lower on the horizon, the days grew shorter and the cold increased. It was a harsh time for humans, with very short days and endless nights. Worries multiplied, anxieties increased, and a vague feeling of fear overwhelmed ancient humans, with their almost nonexistent means of defense and limited food sources.
