When emotions peak, we often remain silent. Then even seventeen syllables are enough.
The haiku, a traditional Japanese poetic form, consists of three lines with 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively. Haiku poetry, intrinsically linked to Zen, appeared in the 15th century and reached its full bloom during the Edo period (1603-1868). Haikus, which remain a vibrant part of Japanese culture to this day, became more widely known in the West from the early 20th century.
