Many of the stories told by economists take the form of models – and beyond anything else, models are stories about how the world works.
We believe, however, that students understand much better and appreciate models more if we present them, as much as possible, in the context of real-world stories that clarify economic concepts and address the concerns of inhabitants in a world shaped by the actions of economic forces.
In the book Fundamentals of Economics, we present a rich series of stories in each chapter: in the introductory text of each chapter, in the supplementary texts "Economics in Practice," in "Global Comparisons," and in the cases "From the Business World." We have adopted a global perspective throughout the book, more than ever before.
This perspective is present from the story in the first chapter, which refers to the Delta of the Pearl River, highlighting the need to pay particular attention to the emergence of China in the global economy.
We have incorporated pedagogical features that enhance learning. These include adaptive questions, solved problems, comprehension questions with their answers, graphical representation questions, and data analysis questions. All have been devised with the sole purpose of supporting the professor's teaching and ensuring the student acquires a solid understanding of the fundamental principles of Economics.
