The Adventure of Parliamentarism in Greece narrates the difficult and unstable course of parliamentary life in Greece. Intense political disputes and conflicts, genuine and fraudulent elections, foreign influences and behind-the-scenes maneuvers compose this mosaic of the Greek parliamentary adventure, through which the protagonists and their actions emerge, sometimes as pioneers and visionaries, other times as negative and fateful.
Numbers, after all, outline this adventure: in 165 years, from 1844 and the first parliamentary elections up to the last ones in 2009, 61 electoral contests have taken place and 188 governments have been formed with 90 different individuals serving as prime ministers.
From the Revolution of 1821, the first Constitution, Ioannis Kapodistrias, and Otto to Charilaos Trikoupis, Eleftherios Venizelos, and the beginning of the National Schism in 1915, this period of nearly a century - narrated in the first volume of the Adventure of Parliamentarism in Greece - represented a blend of achievements but also setbacks.
Significant decisions as well as critical mistakes, remarkable achievements, and disappointing vulnerabilities marked the early steps of Greek parliamentarism during this first major period of its existence, from the Revolution of September 3, 1843, until the arrival of Eleftherios Venizelos and his conflict with Constantine I amidst the turmoil of the Great War.
