In Miss Julie, the conflict is twofold: between the two sexes and between two social classes. Julie and Jean represent both the eternally hostile dynamic of the female with the male and the opposing factions: a decaying and illegitimate aristocracy in decline, and an unrelenting working class on the rise. The tragedy unfolds in one act with only three characters.

One summer night at the count's estate, Miss Julie, the 25-year-old spoiled daughter, entices her father's servant, Jean, a young educated man who is initially humble, into a game of love. However, the balance of power quickly shifts, and repressed feelings emerge: Miss Julie is weak and unhappy, while Jean, with a sense of adventure, seeks to exploit this relationship to rise socially and economically.

♦ The most powerful scene unfolds in an empty café on Christmas Eve. The monologue of Mrs. X, who is married to Bob, the theater director, is addressed to Amelia, an actress and her husband's mistress. One speaks, the other remains silent, with no clarity on who is the more powerful.
