Theatrical work based on the novella "Michael Kohlhaas" by Heinrich von Kleist.
In the 16th century, a peaceful citizen, the horse dealer Michael Kohlhaas, leaves his village in Brandenburg to sell the horses he has raised with great effort in neighboring Saxony. The new ruler of Saxony has closed the road and demands a passage permit and money. Kohlhaas proposes to be allowed to pass for just one time and to bring back the permit upon his return. He departs, leaving his two best horses as collateral.
Upon his return, he finds the horses in terrible condition, as they have been forced into exhausting labor, and his friend and caretaker brutally beaten. Kohlhaas seeks compensation, but the ruler humiliates him and kills his wife, while in his attempt to seek justice through legal means, the State and the Church show indifference. Kohlhaas decides to take the Law into his own hands and sets fire to Wittenberg.
Next to him, many people gather who, disillusioned by the injustice they experience daily, form a small army that burns, murders, and pillages. Based on an iconic work of German literature, Heinrich von Kleist's novella "Michael Kohlhaas," the new work by Yiannis Kalavrianos explores the nature of power and the issues raised by social conflicts, raising questions about the moral boundaries of a rebellion.
