Description

This edition marks the first publication of Wilde's typed text, 120 years after the day it was submitted. The variation of the novel presented in this book follows the text as corrected by Wilde: it represents the novel as the author envisioned it in the spring of 1890, before the editor began to intervene with his pencil on the text and before the later “self-censorship” of the book by Wilde himself, when he corrected and expanded it for Ward, Lock and Co. The result is a bolder and more scandalous book, more vivid in its sexual content, and for this reason less satisfactory compared to the two subsequently published variations in terms of adaptation to Victorian representation conventions. This edition signifies the first time Wilde's typed text has been published, over 120 years after the author submitted it to Lippincott's Magazine, a fitting, timeless embodiment of what Wilde confessed, that Dorian Gray is “what I would like to be, in some other perhaps times.”
