The bin is all plastic, meaning even the part you step on to open the lid.
So far I haven't had any issues, meaning it hasn't broken, but I don't have it in the kitchen, it's in the room so it doesn't get used that much.
Now, the bin doesn't stay open, which for me is a positive, but for some it might be a negative. I think you can cut a piece of plastic at the back of the lid so it doesn't close, but I haven't tried it.
