Description

At the crossroads between Europe and Asia, Anatolia experienced the influence of various ways of life and culture. Its coastal areas, both Aegean and Pontic, as well as those of the Sea of Marmara, are open to external contacts. In contrast, the inland regions are characterized by the cultivation of large estates, the Latin latifundia. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that, with the necessary comparisons, the differentiation between these areas runs throughout the history of Anatolia and, in some way, continues to this day. Anatolia, be it coastal or inland, has indelibly marked the fortunes of Hellenism as the heart of eternal Romiosyni.

  • The spiritual and cultural contribution of the Greeks of the East.

  • The causes and consequences of the Catastrophe through an insightful perspective.

Why We Loved It:

  • Because Arveler approaches the subject not only as a historian, but also as a voice that honors her roots.

  • For the way she connects memory with the identity of modern Hellenism.

  • Because she manages to condense centuries of history into a text full of substance and emotion.

This book is for you if...

Do you want to understand the profound significance of Asia Minor for Hellenism and are looking for a text that combines scientific credibility with love for the homeland?

Read an excerpt:

“Asia Minor is not for us a lost homeland; it is a homeland of memory and spirit that will never be lost as long as we study it and keep it alive within us. Greek thought was born there, Byzantium flourished there, and Hellenism found its most creative self there, blending cultures and traditions of centuries.

The catastrophe of 1922 was a trauma that changed our course, but the people who came from there brought with them an entire world. They did not bring only their pain; they brought their light, their education, and their nobility, enriching Greece with a new strength that kept it standing in difficult times.

This book is a tribute to that ‘heart’ that still beats within our traditions, our language, and the way we perceive the world. Because Asia Minor is the home of our soul, the starting point and the support of our historical continuity.”
