1923. Refugee settlement. The old notebook with the recipes of her grandmother that survived destruction brings to Filio Baltatzi memories of her beautiful days. 1917. Smyrna at its peak, as well as the Baltatzi family, one of the most important in the city. Life is an endless celebration of joy, hope, and anticipation, which reaches its peak with the arrival of the Greeks.
Along with the family's story, the relationships, the loves, the rivalries, unfolds the thread of Smyrna's history. Around them, discord, interests, international agendas, betrayals by friends and allies, and at the center, residents of cosmopolitan Smyrna who are unwittingly heading towards a tragic end.
The work was written after years of research and is based on testimonies from Greeks, Levantines, and Turks, as well as unknown documents to the general public. It is a work that celebrates the culture and beauty of life in Ionia and the contribution of refugees to modern Greece.
“A moving theatrical work filled with nostalgia, tenderness, passion, but without bias. Mimi Denisi knows how to awaken the deepest hidden emotions with her words.” Olympia Dukakis
“Mimi Denisi's deeply moving and exhaustively investigative play may ignite yet another fire, not those that destroy, but rather purify the souls of two nations.” Martin Sherman
