The resurgence of interest in narcissism within the framework of psychoanalytic theory justifies the publication of this collection of articles, all centered around this specific question, one of the most enigmatic in psychoanalysis.
Freud, after the presentation of narcissism in 1914, was to lose interest in this concept, which he had brilliantly developed, when he suddenly made theoretical revisions that occurred around 1920, which would primarily lead to the final theory of drives (the opposition between life drives and death drives), the new conception of the psychic apparatus (Id-Ego-Superego), the new conception of anxiety, etc.
After a period of oblivion, the value of this concept without heirs has been restored in France for several years now, at the moment when America recently seemed to rediscover its existence.
André Green, who has never ceased to be interested in this issue, is nevertheless one of the few authors - if not the only one - who attempted to articulate the theory of narcissism with that of the final theory of drives. While generally only the positive aspects related to sexual life drives are examined from narcissism, he shows the need to support the existence of a death narcissism, which he calls negative narcissism. In contrast to the former, which aims at the achievement of the unity of the Ego, the latter tends toward its negation, looking towards zero.
