Description

Description

In the 1958 elections, EDA made a big surprise by taking the position of the main opposition with a percentage of 24.42%. This impressive comeback of the defeated from the Civil War, just nine years after its end, caused panic among the regime's ranks. The post-civil war persecutions and terrorism, which until then had been slowly but steadily de-escalating, were reignited. The Military Courts resumed, inactive unconstitutional laws were taken out of the drawers, and the Security, the Gendarmerie, and the TEA were unleashed in the hunt for progressive citizens.

Against this new round of terrorism, which bore the stamp of the Karamanlis government, the Left fought a stubborn battle on many fronts: in Parliament, in the streets, in the courts, in prisons, and in exile; and also, on the level of everyday life, where hundreds of thousands of people faced persecutions, violence, intimidation, and social exclusion. This book talks about this struggle, narrating scenes and episodes of an uncompromising political battle for democracy, social justice, and dignity.
