It is well known that Patriarch Gregory the Fifth led the Church and the Nation during the very difficult years of preparation and the proclamation of the revolution of 1821. It is also known that during this challenging time, he faced major and critical issues and had to make difficult decisions, the most significant of which was the excommunication of the revolution.
It should be noted that these difficult decisions and actions of the Patriarch were initially viewed as necessities of the times, in order to save the Nation from the certain slaughter that threatened it. This is precisely why the Patriarch, after his hanging, was recognized as a Hieromartyr and National Martyr.
However, a harsh and relentless criticism began later regarding his role, accusing him, in no uncertain terms, of being pro-Turkish and an enemy of the revolution. This criticism is echoed even today with particular intensity, in light of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the proclamation of the revolution of 1821.
This study aims to respond to this criticism. It does so by invoking indisputable historical facts and without any bias or ulterior motive.
