Attica Mountains Hiking Guide
Attica land. A land synonymous with thyme and the scent of herbs, the saltiness of the sea, but also of pine. A land of olives and vineyards, where one of the most wonderful civilizations flourished. A land synonymous with measure and harmony. But also a land of overconsumption and urban migration.
The Attica mountains follow suit. They suffer like the rest of the Attica land from human excesses: fires and urban sprawl, roads, forests of antennas and wind turbines, quarries, and rubbish. However, they remain mountains of measure. You will not find here high altitudes and steep cliffs, wild ravines, and inaccessible peaks. The Attica mountains are precious, not because they offer opportunities for great conquests and feats, but because they provide every resident of the city, and specifically Athens, the chance to get to know something of the land they inhabit in its most untainted - as far as that is possible - state.
In this small guide, a selection of short and longer routes through the five largest mountains of Attica is presented. They include ascents to peaks, passages by beaches, trails in sweet forests, and on bare slopes warmed by the sun, everything a mountain can offer.
Easily accessible, some even by urban bus, these routes are for anyone who wishes to approach Attica's nature, to know it, to enjoy it, and ultimately to protect it.
