Review this product
  • It perfectly describes the (timeless) psychology of the monks. Despite the criticism it makes, it is, at its core, particularly conciliatory towards Mount Athos and its inhabitants, probably due to the influence of Orientalism and sympathy for the backward. It contains interesting psychological and cultural observations.
The translation into Greek is very poor.
Very interesting are the reviews by various people (F. Politis, K. Bastias) from newspapers that the book includes as an introduction in Suazi's text for Themos Kornaros' book "Mount Athos. The saints without a mask." Kornaros went to Mount Athos at the same period and suffered the monks' behavior. That is probably why he is more uncompromising (and justifiably so) towards them than the author, who nevertheless describes similar situations to Kornaros.
