The year 2021 marks the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution. Besides the state's efforts to celebrate the anniversary with the brilliance it deserves, the people must also be fully informed about the multifaceted and complex epic of 1821.
The best celebration of a great event is the accurate knowledge of that event. Sarantos I. Kargakos, faithful to Leopold von Ranke's principle (1795-1886), worked hard to record what actually happened (“Wie es eigentlich gewesen ist”). He avoided what is currently fashionable: the fabrication of facts at will. The clever Talleyrand once said: “Nothing is as easily made as facts.” Yes, but nothing is as hard to write when you respect the facts.
And this is something the Greek people have begun to appreciate. This is the best reward for us.
