“I met” Ioannis Kapodistrias through the study of my local history, the study of the Ionian State, the Ionian issue, and British rule in the Ionian Islands. It was the understanding of British policy regarding the Ionian and Greek issues, as aspects of the Eastern Question, that led me to study Kapodistrias and his politics, examining his treatment within the context of the relentless rivalries for a solution to the unsolved, even today, Eastern Question.
Subsequently, the relentless campaign against Ioannis Kapodistrias, the unfounded slurs, and the unscientific passion to discredit him led me to search for the causes of the reproduction and circulation of false, by conscience, accusations against him and to respond with well-founded arguments to this indictment.
The fruits of this sense of duty towards historical truth and our right to Memory resulted in my book The Unknown Kapodistrias (Papazisis Publications, Athens 2011) and the present work. Believing that understanding the treatment of Kapodistrias and Hellenism in the pursuit of a Greek solution to the Eastern Question is necessary and critically useful for today, and believing that the dominant perception of our history is a key component in shaping a more broadly accepted strategy for our path in the third century of our free national life, I wish you a pleasant reading.
