Description & Specifications

“The last piece of the journey was intense and invigorating for the imagination. Large and mysterious bare peaks constantly outlined the west, as the low northern noon sun or the even lower southern midnight sun, which scraped the horizon, bathed the white snow, the bluish ice, the water routes, and the black chunks protruding on the granite slopes with its dull red rays. The lonely peaks were sporadically whipped by the wild gusts of the dreadful Antarctic wind, whose rhythm sometimes vaguely resembled a frenzied and penetrating piping with notes that extended over a wide range, a range that for some unconscious reason seemed disturbing and terrifyingly dark. Something in the scenery reminded me of the strange and frightening paintings of Asia by Nicholas Roerich and the even more peculiar and unsettling descriptions of the malevolent mythical landscape of Leng, from the dreadful Necronomicon of the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred. Later, I bitterly regretted even having opened that horrible book in the university library.

The legendary novella of the Lord of Terror is added to the series of his Complete Works. One of the best-known stories – and for some the pinnacle – of H. P. Lovecraft confronts the reader with both the then unexplored Antarctica and the origins of several elements of the Cthulhu Mythos. Professor Dyer, a prominent geologist, learns that a scientific expedition will soon depart for Antarctica following the path of the journey he himself made a few years earlier. Hoping to prevent the attempt, Dyer decides to make a full account of the tragic events he survived, this time without omitting the excerpts he had kept silent about upon his return, out of fear of being deemed crazy.

An ancient, alien civilization and its signs, well hidden behind the Mountains of Madness, spring forth from the professor's narrative and the pages of the 6th book in the Complete Works of H. P. Lovecraft published by Oxy Editions. The novella At the Mountains of Madness was written in 1931, while in 2006 Guillermo del Toro wrote a script for its film adaptation. And while it may still remain a dream for him, recent information suggests that there is a serious possibility of its realization in collaboration with the Netflix platform.
