WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT THE BOOK

Delightful… A marvelous travel book and a brilliant exploration of humanity. New Statesman

Introspection, history, and reporting find their place in this balanced and clear book. The Sunday Times

An exceptionally successful attempt to describe the reactions of a worldly man (in the liberal sense) when faced with monastic life. The Daily Telegraph

If Fermor's greatest travel books are baroque cathedrals, splendidly and heavily adorned with all sorts of information and descriptions, Time to be Quiet, as befits its title and theme, is a more modest yet intricate chapel, where Fermor invites us to listen to the silence of monastic life. Michalis Makropoulos

However, here, in the shadows of the north at the abbey, there was never a smile or a scowl. No seismic tremor of joy, anger, or fear could ever, I felt, disturb the peaceful geography of these solitary features. Their eyelids were always lowered and, when they occasionally lifted, no treacherous gleam appeared, only a carefully cultivated calm, retreat, and serenity, and occasionally an expression of distant and tired melancholy. The muffled light within the church hung a gossamer veil between us, exactly reproducing the atmosphere of a Spanish atelier in the early seventeenth century, where –stern, strict, pale, weary– the models of Thourbaran and El Greco were bowed in prayer.
