Description

Description

The volume 'Therasia I, a Timeless Journey' is the first contribution to the history of the island of Therasia from the distant past (Bronze Age) to the recent (architecture, social anthropology) edited by Claire Palivou and Irida Zachili. It is a series of studies focusing on various research aspects (geology, mining technology, ceramics analysis, etc.), or the search for ancient documentation through surface research.

Essentially, it represents a timeless mapping of human presence on the island, highlighting choices, limitations, changes, continuities, and discontinuities, and exploring the phenomenon of islandness in various ways.

The research on a small island, Therasia, across from the significant and multifaceted neighbor, Thera, has a demonstrative character. It is a case study of how relationships, contacts, and networks functioned between Thera and Therasia, as well as with other Aegean islands, illustrating interdependence and relative autonomy. It sheds light on the survival strategies on small islands.

This includes the adaptation of settlements to the environment, the utilization of human natural resources and spatial planning, and water management. A whole world opens up from a small crack, Therasia: terraces, wells, crops, the harsh life in the mines, festivals, and the grape harvest.

Alongside these are the celebrations at school, dishwashing and slippers, volcanic activity, meetings at the Citizen Service Center and in courtyards - small events that shape life on a small island across from a powerful neighbor.
