Simply insert one or two cloves into the head and squeeze the handles to crush them. To release the mashed garlic, press the release button and the blade will clean it out instantly. To remove any leftover garlic residue or skins that may have remained inside the head, you can use the cleaning tool stored in one of the handles. This has bristles on one side to clean the corners of the crushing plate and a curved scoop to scrape the skins from inside. After use, simply place the tool back in the handle for storage. It can be hand washed.
