This book examines the issue of nuclear weapons in Greece during the period 1957-1963.
The proposal from the USA in 1957 for the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons and medium-range missiles on European soil, within the framework of NATO, deeply engaged Greek society and the political system, as it posed a series of critical political, strategic, and, above all, moral issues at a time when the Cold War was raging.
Based on primary archival material, both Greek and international, this study approaches the internal and international dimensions of the issue and analyzes the intra-NATO relationships and Greece's strategic choices within the context of the Western alliance.
Additionally, it explores the impact that nuclear weapons had on the Greek political system and Greek society with the emergence of the pacifist movement during the same period.
Nuclear weapons were linked to significant other parameters of Greek political life. The book highlights this aspect, raising questions about the autonomy of the country's foreign policy, the connection between foreign policy and internal politics and social life, as well as the intertwining of the pacifist movement with pressing social demands of the time.
