Breastfeeding is a human right for every mother and every child that comes into this world. Yet, nine out of ten mothers in Greece start breastfeeding their baby only to abandon the effort prematurely within the coming weeks after birth, systematically facing dozens of obstacles to breastfeeding, with inadequate support and undermining.
This book aims to equip Greek women, who are coerced by the bottle culture not to follow their desire - to breastfeed their child. The current system deprives the vast majority of women who want to breastfeed of their freedom of choice. These mothers urgently need arguments and scientific data to counter comments that are hostile to breastfeeding, opposing practices, pressures, and beliefs without any scientific basis that undermine their efforts daily.
Furthermore, this book aims to help convey to the general public the amazing truths that have been rapidly revealed about maternal breastfeeding in recent years through scientific research from around the world. It is also aimed at the immediate environment of new parents and health and non-health professionals who come into contact with young children and mothers. Finally, it interests state and social bodies, as it demonstrates that increasing the rates of breastfeeding children is in the interest - health, economic, ecological, social - of all.
“In the not-so-distant future, I can imagine the day when all the confusion, the misconceptions, and attitudes about breastfeeding in the general public will have disappeared, as a result of two or three successive generations of women who successfully and exclusively breastfed their children. I can envision the day when all Greek women will be encouraged to start breastfeeding and will be free to breastfeed their child, without imposed obstacles, for as long as they wish and can.” [Excerpt from the text on the back cover of the edition]
