It is often repeated that European and Western tradition has its roots in the Greek world. However, it is forgotten to specify that there is no singular, marble-like, solemn, and Olympic Greece. Plato wrote it, and Friedrich Nietzsche reiterated it: there is the Greece of philosophers and that of tradition.
Homer or Plato? Starting from the issue of justice – its importance and its limits – the aim of the book is to reconstruct the conceptual coordinates that underlie two worlds that are so close yet so far apart. While philosophers will try to show the meaning, order, and beauty of the world – its rationality, in a word – what connects others, from Homer to Sophocles and Thucydides, is rather the awareness that reality is something ambiguous, from which it is impossible to derive value judgments or rules of behavior.
And this in turn leads to questioning what that elusive being is that is man: a restless animal, who lacking a fixed place in the world is always striving to conquer nature, but is at the same time exposed to the risk of making fatal mistakes. What is the meaning of our existence? This was discussed in Athens.
