The representation of biological diversity finds its perfect expression in the illustrations of the renowned zoologist and father of parasitology Rudolf Leuckart (1823-1898). With great detail, Leuckart illustrates the external morphological and anatomical characteristics of representative organisms from almost all animal groups.
His illustrations have served as valuable educational material for teaching zoology at many universities around the world since the 19th century. The Zoology Laboratory of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki acquired an almost complete series of these illustrations in the early years of its operation, with which many generations of students were taught zoology until the 1980s.
On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the Department of Biology is unveiling a portion of this rare and valuable material.
