The difference is that the levels have a much smaller area and some features from the previous 2D games are present here as well. Each level has a more linear path compared to previous 3D Mario games, there is a limited time, and at the end of the level there is the familiar "flag". 3D Land is the predecessor of 3D World and it is evident since the two games are similar, with the latter having larger environments and greater freedom of movement in the vertical axis.
