In The Six Characters, who seek a playwright to complete their half-formed literary existence and come to the theater to present their drama to the director and the actors, the theme of absolute loneliness of the individual appears with dual refraction, thus becoming richer in shades and meaning.
The myth of life is made even more foreign to the truth by its reflection: Art. When the actors attempt to perform the drama of The Six Characters, they protest; what they see being played is not what they have lived. The Character: "Believe me, I admire your artists, but they are not us." The Director: "It's obvious. They are not you, they are the actors." The Character: "Wonderful, the actors. They play, and indeed excellently, our roles. But for us, this gives the impression of something different, that would like to be the same and yet is not. It is something that belongs to them, that no longer belongs to us...".
What is the result? There is no outcome in the play; these fictional Six Characters suddenly enter the stage of the theater at the time of the rehearsal and with their intervention disrupt the logical order of reality, changing its flow, thus in a moment they disappear, having revealed some aspects of their horrific drama, leaving the audience with the impression of a confusion of dream and truth, and the bitter taste of the tragic loneliness of man – no one understands him, not even he himself...
