Precautions: 

• Folic acid should be administered with caution and under the guidance of a physician, in adults with megaloblastic anemia. 
• The cause of the anemia should be investigated, because if it is due to a deficiency of B12 only and not folic acid, folic acid supplements may correct the anemia but clinically mask the damage to the nerves, spinal cord, or brain caused by the B12 deficiency until irreversible lesions appear.
• For this reason, a differential diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia should always be made before starting any treatment.
