Through the lens of the "microhistory" of a Phanariot, Stefanus Vogoides, who remained loyal to the sultan (even though his brother was a fervent supporter of the Greek revolution and a close friend of Korais), the book explores the "great," fascinating, and in many ways unknown history of the Phanariot community – one of the most prominent and peculiar elites in the Balkans – outlining the extensive networks that transcended ethnic, religious, and institutional boundaries in which it operated.
It thus sheds new light on the crisis and transformation of the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century, a critical period that marks the eve of the Western-style reforms of the Tanzimat and the beginnings of three distinct stories: nationalism in the Balkans, imperial modernization in Constantinople, and European colonialism in the Middle East.
The result is a broad-spectrum analysis of governance as a living experience at a historical moment when a clear plan of power seemed to be absent.
