Motherhood? Again? The common thread that connects the research presented here develops at the level of analytical interest in motherhood in Greece in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Drawing from contemporary ethnographic production, the studies in this volume question the analytical significance of motherhood in the study of Greek society, while simultaneously aiming to engage with recent theoretical and ethnographic shifts that have led to the emergence of 'new' anthropological studies on kinship.

Organized into four distinct sections, Origins of Relationships: family and individualization, Terms of Kinship: 'biological' and 'social' motherhood, Politics of Reproduction: acceptance and exclusion, Divine Interventions: time and continuity, they draw ethnographic material from a multitude of research frameworks, such as interviews, participant observation in clinics, prisons, and patient groups, archival research on laws, legal texts, and court decisions, analysis of printed discourse and online forums.

Among the interconnections between the texts, the interest in the national discourse on low birth rates, the emergence of narratives about 'good citizens' and 'good mothers', the gendering of parenthood, and the connection of women's reproductive bodies with biopolitical controls and discipline stands out, as does the link between motherhood and technological reproduction with law and religion.

By placing motherhood in the foreground, the authors of the volume traverse the boundaries of familial relations to unravel aspects of the contemporary Greek cultural condition that are directly connected to the state, laws, religion, technology, and medicalized reproduction.
