The presence of the Jewish element in today's Greek territory dates back to ancient times and certainly goes back to the Pre-Christian era. This long history has been tumultuous, marked by turbulent periods, anti-Semitic outbursts, pogroms, and blood libels, so that peaceful coexistence with the Christian element remains the goal, but unfortunately, not the norm. The history of Greek Jews remained in the shadows and silence until about two decades ago. There were almost no historical writings, and only a few and rare monographs on individual Jewish communities. Therefore, a significant and dynamic part of Hellenism was marginalized in historiography, even though its presence and contribution were important for the country's history. It is true that in recent years, there has been a historiographical explosion, as well as a surge in memory. Numerous studies have now been conducted on various Jewish communities, and many books have been published and continue to be published. It seems that members of the academic community have turned their attention to researching this specific field, while at the same time, there is an eager readership eager to read and learn about the history of their "other," the Greek Jewish neighbor, fellow citizen, and compatriot.
Perhaps in no other European country does the Jewish presence exhibit such diversity and interest as in Greece. The first traces of it can be detected as far back as antiquity. It is likely that these are the oldest Jewish communities on European soil. Hellenized Romaniotes, Sephardim from the western Mediterranean, and Ashkenazim from Central Europe create a unique and colorful mosaic of communities, each of which is an integral piece featuring its own fascinating history.
Thessaloniki as the Jerusalem of the Balkans, Ioannina as the capital of the Romaniotes, Chania, Corfu, Rhodes, Didymoteicho, Chalkida, Komotini, Larissa, Volos, Kavala, Athens—all together and each community separately emerge as inseparable parts of Hellenism and the rich history of the country.
For the first time, an effort is being made to present scientifically in Greek literature a complete and comprehensive picture of the history of the Jews of Greece, through testimonies, photographs, poems, and songs from the moment they appeared in the Greek space until the Holocaust and beyond.
There is also an attempt to highlight the full extent of the contribution of Greek Jews to the economic, cultural, spiritual, and political life of Greece, as well as to "reveal" the golden and dark pages of the coexistence of Greek Jews with Christians.
