Description

Description

Operates with the SATA III communication protocol and is recommended for home use. It is the most modern SATA standard and the motherboard must support it for the drive to function at its maximum potential. It can also be connected to SATA II ports without any problem, but it will work at lower speeds.

For installation in a desktop computer, you will need a SATA III data cable and an available SATA port on the motherboard. You will also need an available power supply cable for a SATA device from the power supply unit.

So far (3 months of use on a Synology NAS), it is fast and quiet. It did not have any factory defects, nor has it shown any bad sectors yet. It is currently about 30% full and the read/write speeds remain close to nominal. I write/rewrite approximately 2.5 TB of backup data to it three times a week. I usually store medium-sized files (350 - 500 MB). It seems that its technology (CMR) is significantly better than previous WD models (comparing it to 3 4TB and 2 2TB drives from the same company that I have been using for backup and redundant on-site storage for several years). I recommend it for NAS use.

So far, 6 WD RED NAS, relatively slow but reliable so far. Most of them have been operating for over five years without any particular issues.

I agree with the reviews that have already been written by others regarding speed, noise, and functionality. Time will tell, it's still early.

The hard drive is CMR technology so prefer it with closed eyes for disk arrays.
