Description

The sense of beauty and the cultivation of the arts have been fundamental and eternal needs of life for humanity. The two-volume work "Byzantine Art" aims to provide a concise yet thorough overview of art in the Byzantine Empire through its various forms and across all major periods.

The present second volume includes the art of the post-Byzantine era (15th - 19th centuries), while the first volume encompasses the art of the Byzantine Empire (330-1453). The author's true intention is for us to understand how this marvel of Byzantine art originated, how it addressed new challenges, and how it achieved recognition and radiance.

Thus, through the profound perspective and analysis of Christos Sp. Soldatos, we find that Byzantine art encompassed all cultural life of the Empire, represented the state's foremost representative in its foreign policy, reflected the grandeur and brilliance both within and outside the state's borders, garnering the greatest glory of the Empire while it was alive, and even after, through the passage of centuries, up until today.

Byzantine art was the most representative, the most renowned, the longest-lasting, and the most eternal achievement of the Byzantine Empire. It was both a Greek and Christian work that developed and grew within the eternally shifting light of the Greek Byzantine Empire, stemming from the persistent artistic inclination of the Greeks since the dawn of historical progress.

Byzantine Art was and remains purely the "unroyal" glory of Byzantium.
