The Distant Country is the last play by Jean-Luc Lagarce. He wrote it a few weeks before his death from AIDS in 1995.
"I’m approaching forty and at this age I will die," says Louis, the central character of the play. The Distant Country has the exact same theme as his previous works such as: I Was at Home and Waiting for the Rain or Just the End of the World.
The Distant Country is precisely a second writing of Just the End of the World, which was not accepted in its time by audiences and critics, but it was not a failure since today it is successfully performed on stages all over the world.
In The Distant Country, Lagarce creates a chorus, like in ancient tragedy, in which not only the living but also the dead are expressed. There are also figures without roles in the story, such as "a boy like the others" or "the warrior, like the others." These in the play represent the people Louis encountered in his life.
The universe of the play resembles a place where the faces and voices of all those Louis crossed paths with during his life meet and intersect.
