Description

Description

It is a great joy and honor, both for Militos publications and for the Panathinaikos team, to realize this edition, 40 years after the historic moment of June 2, 1971, when the Panathinaikos team faced off against Europe's top team of the '70s, Ajax, at Wembley in the European Champions Cup Final, and wrote its name in golden letters in the pages of Greek football.

With 100,000 spectators in the stadium and another 100,000,000 television viewers, Greece united erupts, proud of its team that made it that far. The nine-month thrilling journey of Panathinaikos to the final match at Wembley remains the greatest football achievement at club level for Greece.

In this luxurious album, we have tried to capture through photographs, documents, and testimonies all the events inside and outside the playing fields: snapshots and moments from all the matches, significant photographs, newspaper archives, the pulse and comments of the era, the atmosphere of celebrations, the emotions, loves, and passions.

The most important thing for me is that, through this whole process of creating the album, I got to know the veteran players of the Wembley team and admired the strength and energy they still maintain in their character, and thus I understood that the flame of Wembley has not yet gone out!

At the same time, I want to sincerely thank them, as without their participation and contribution in terms of photographs and testimonies, this edition could not have been completed. Finally, I hope that we are delivering to the Greek reader an aesthetically pleasing photographic and socio-historical album, as a starting point for a new era in Greek football, in which creative passion, competition, and mutual respect will reign again, far and beyond any kind of fanaticism and violence.
